Alkmaar has become known as Holland’s foremost cheese town. During the season (from the first Friday in April until the first Friday in September), there is a traditional Cheese Market every Friday morning. The cheeses are sold by dealers through haggling. Then the 400-year-old cheese carriers' guild goes into action, with stretchers to carry the cheese after the party is weighed at the Waag (the weighing house). The Weighing House was located where the Cheese Museum presently stands. Here the story of dairy production is told.

However there is much more to Alkmaar than cheese and a stroll through the town centre will reveal some of more than 400 historical monuments: De Waag, the 16th century Town Hall, the Great St. Lawrence Church, the many almshouses, facades and canals, give the city a distinct look.

Not far from Alkmaar we can visit a wonderful windmill museum at Schermerhorn, where you could view a real working water pump windmill and understand a little more about the history of our country.
