Elburg

This well-preserved, medieval fishing village, has kept the characteristics of its 13th’ century design. Since the close of the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea) in the 1930’s fishing stopped being a viable source of income. In the past decades tourism has taken its place and Elburg has evolved into an attractive tourist destination.

Lovely shops, cafes and restaurants dot its centre. It is worthwhile to visit the local museum, which is housed in an old monastery. The old synagogue of the town has been restored and houses an authentic museum about a small Jewish community in the big Christian world. In the Tourist Information Office (VVV) you can get a printed city walk.
A visit to Elburg could be combined with the tour to Giethoorn, Staphorst or Enkhuizen.
